We are the data controller for the information described in this policy. If you have any question about how we use your information, please contact us using the details above and your message will reach the person responsible for data protection.
What we collect and why
When you make a donation
We collect your name, email address, and the amount and date of your gift. If you choose to give under Gift Aid, we also collect your home address so that we can claim the tax relief.
Your card details are entered directly into our payment provider, Stripe, and are never seen or stored by Birmingham City Mission.
We use this information to process your gift, to send you a receipt, to keep proper financial records, and to claim Gift Aid where you have told us we may.
When you sign up to our newsletter
We collect your name and email address so that we can send you news about our work. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of any email we send, or by contacting us.
When you contact us
If you send us a message through the website or by email, we keep your message and contact details so that we can reply and, where relevant, keep a record of what was agreed.
When you browse the site
Our website uses cookies and similar technology to keep the site working properly and to understand in general terms how visitors use it. This does not identify you personally. You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings.
Our lawful basis for using your information
- Consent for sending you our newsletter and other marketing messages. You can withdraw this at any time.
- Legal obligation for keeping financial records and for Gift Aid claims to HM Revenue and Customs.
- Legitimate interests for replying to your enquiries, administering your donation and the general running of the charity. We only rely on this where it does not override your own rights.
Who we share your information with
We do not sell your information and we do not share it for anyone else's marketing. We use trusted service providers who handle information on our behalf and only on our instructions.
- Stripe takes payments securely
- Mailchimp sends our newsletter
- Microsoft provides our email and document storage
- Webflow hosts this website
Where you have given a Gift Aid declaration, we share the necessary details with HM Revenue and Customs. We may also disclose information where the law requires it, or where there is a serious concern about someone's safety.
How long we keep it
We keep your information only for as long as we need it for the purpose it was given. Records of donations and Gift Aid declarations are kept for as long as HM Revenue and Customs requires. If you ask to be removed from our newsletter, we act on that straight away.
Your rights
Under data protection law you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the information we hold about you
- ask us to correct anything that is wrong
- ask us to delete your information
- ask us to restrict or stop using it
- object to us using it, including for marketing
- withdraw your consent at any time
To do any of these, email office@birminghamcitymission.co.uk or write to us at the address above. We will respond within one month.
Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first so that we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or by telephone on 0303 123 1113.
